Art
– Creating Meaning through Literature and the Arts
by Claudia E. Cornett, 2003
The School in Rose Valley has a rich and diverse history in providing a strong, relevant arts education. From its inception, art has played a major role in curriculum, at first in reaction to the Industrial Revolution and even more so today though the advancement of technology. As the children progress through preschool and elementary grades, the students at SRV learn the skills of observation and examine objects and events in their own lives.
Art fosters the "acquisition of cultural literacy while enhancing language development, creativity, and communication skills." The school's guiding principles are dedicated to the cultivation of creative thinking skills and the necessity to learn to work collaboratively. Our increasingly global society makes it imperative that we understand not only one's own cultural heritage, but cultures across the globe. Art also provides opportunities for interdisciplinary connections across the curriculum, making learning more holistic and relevant to children. We learn about each other and we communicate through the variety of arts: fine arts, music, dance, or drama.
Through art, the uniqueness of each child can be addressed and recognized. The School in Roes Valley recognizes the necessity to engage each child's multiple intelligences in order to develop their social, emotional and aesthetic maturity. The School in Rose Valley believes that children learn most by doing, and in art creation is at the heart of this instruction.
The SRV Arts curriculum specifies what all students should know and be able to do in the visual arts as a result of their K-6 studies. Both national and state standards in art education were consulted in forming our curriculum. The curriculum reflects high expectations and outlines the essential knowledge, processes, and skills needed by all students. The art program emphasizes the understanding of materials, techniques and processes. It also emphasizes how the visual arts communicate feelings and experiences – something we consider essential for children at each grade level.
The SRV art curriculum is organized around three big concepts:
- How Art Communicates
- How Art is Organized
- How Art Shapes and Reflects Culture
