New Kitchen and its Impact on the Education Program

If you haven't seen it yet, be sure to stop by to see our newly renovated school kitchen. Unlike most schools, the kitchen at The School in Rose Valley is directly linked to our curriculum. Our food policy is reflective of our progressive pedagogy and mission to educate the whole child.

Children's physical well being and academic success is directly connected to the food they eat. Teaching them about nutrition and where their food comes are valuable life lessons.

New kitchen renovations

Anu (Director of Staff and Program Development) spent a good portion of her summer working with Dawn (Science teacher) and Maria (School Cook) to integrate our Science curricula with our kitchen and Organic Garden and Learning Center. This year, look for evidence of more direct connection to the food our students' plant and harvest with the school's lunch program. In addition, due to the expanded space we now have in the kitchen area, we will be able to involve children more directly in mini courses and classroom projects focused on cooking, meal planning, nutrition and more.

Newly Renovated Rawson Building Opens

The School in Rose Valley opened the doors this fall to a newly renovated 'green' facility, housing three preschool programs and the multi-age third and fourth grade classes. Faculty, parents and students alike celebrated this latest sustainable effort and the School's fourth major recent renovation project in time for the beginning of the new school year. For more information read the press release.

SRV Students are Climbing the Walls

An indoor traverse rock-climbing wall has been installed in Grace. (Thank you Ridge & Brooks!) Children are natural climbers and wall climbing gives them a wonderful outlet for this innate desire. Climbing also helps students build physical confidence while promoting physical fitness. Rock climbing fosters cardiovascular health, strength, flexibility and coordination and develops essential skills like problem solving, goal setting, perseverance and patience.

Kindergarten through 6th grade students support each other as they traverse the wall, providing both physical safety spotting and verbal encouragement. After each session they reflect on the climbing experience. These reflections, like those incorporated after many other activities throughout their school day, help students grow both as individuals and as members of their groups through personal observations, self-assessments and feedback from peers and their teachers on their individual efforts and group dynamics.

Grace wins design award!

In 2003, the general contractor for our multi-purpose building, The Grace Rotzel Center (named for SRV's founding principal), submitted the building for consideration for the 12th Annual Merit Construction Award of Excellence given by The Southeast Pennsylvania Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors. Our building won the award for the best institutional/educational building in the "Under $2 million" category!
