Art
Does yellow have a sound? What does red sound like? The Primary Circle explored concepts of color and sound in art recently. We conducted a short sound experiment using a painting titled "Fugue in Two Parts" from the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Is the opposite true? Does music have a color? Do you picture certain colors in your mind when you listen to music? We listened to two very different pieces of music, "Night on Bald Mountain" by Mussorgsky and "Latura," one of the oldest written pieces of music, and expressed in color what we heard.
Children then shared what they noticed about each other's work. Their use of vocabulary applied to both the music and the art; words like gesture, stroke, color, beat. Check out the display in Grace. Can you tell what the music was like by looking at the artwork?
We plan a visit to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. We might decide to dance to the "sound" of a Jackson Pollack, or sing to the beat of a modern master. If you've ever felt like you just don't get modern art, join us. We will be happy to explain it to you.
