Middle Circle is a time of remarkable growth as children become increasingly independent, confident, and reflective learners. At The School in Rose Valley, third and fourth graders take greater ownership of their learning as they plan projects, conduct research, collaborate with classmates, and tackle increasingly complex questions. Through this intentionally designed approach, they learn to think critically, solve authentic problems, consider multiple perspectives, and retain the curiosity, creativity, and joy that define a progressive education.
Learning in Middle Circle is experiential, integrated, and driven by inquiry. Projects often grow from children’s questions, classroom discoveries, and real-world events. Students might create a model government to understand how civic systems work, map their community to explore geography and human impact, or design sustainable solutions inspired by environmental studies. Along the way, they naturally weave together reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, and the arts.
Teachers thoughtfully guide the process, introducing new skills, asking challenging questions, and encouraging students to test ideas, revise their thinking, and make meaningful connections. As children collaborate, solve problems, and take increasing ownership of their learning, they develop confidence, resilience, and intellectual independence.
Rather than memorizing isolated facts, students learn how to ask thoughtful questions, evaluate evidence, think critically, and apply their knowledge in new situations. These habits of mind prepare them not only for future academic success but for a lifetime of curiosity and engaged learning.
Mathematics
Mathematics in Middle Circle emphasizes reasoning, problem solving, and conceptual understanding. Students develop fluency with multi-digit operations, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals, geometry, measurement, and data analysis while learning to explain their thinking and compare different solution strategies. They investigate patterns, make estimates, collect and interpret data, and apply mathematics to authentic projects and real-world situations, building confidence as capable mathematicians.
Literacy & Language Arts
Students become increasingly thoughtful readers, writers, and communicators. They read a wide range of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and informational texts, learning to analyze, interpret, question, and make connections. Writing spans stories, essays, reports, journals, poetry, and research projects, with an emphasis on revision, organization, and writing for an authentic audience. Regular discussions, presentations, and collaborative work help students develop confidence in expressing ideas, listening carefully, and engaging respectfully with others.
Social Studies
Social studies helps students understand how people, communities, cultures, and governments shape the world around them. Through research, simulations, discussion, and project work, students explore geography, history, migration, civics, economics, and environmental stewardship. They examine multiple perspectives, practice democratic decision-making, and consider how individuals can contribute meaningfully to their communities and the wider world.
Social & Emotional Growth
Social and emotional learning is woven into every part of the Middle Circle experience. Within the mixed-age classroom, students practice empathy, resilience, self-advocacy, conflict resolution, and collaborative problem solving. They learn when to lead and when to follow, how to give and receive feedback, and how to take responsibility for their choices. As they become more independent, they develop the confidence and judgment needed to contribute thoughtfully to their classroom and community.

The Middle Circle years lay the groundwork for the increasing independence and leadership of the Oldest Group years. By this stage, students have learned to pursue meaningful questions, collaborate thoughtfully with others, persevere through challenges, and communicate their ideas with growing clarity and confidence. They understand that learning is an active process of inquiry, reflection, and revision.
More than mastering new academic skills, Middle Circle students develop the habits of mind that will serve them throughout their education—and throughout life: intellectual curiosity, resilience, empathy, and the confidence to embrace new challenges.
