Kindergarten at The School in Rose Valley is a year of joyful transition. A bridge between early childhood and the elementary years, children continue to learn through play and exploration while beginning to take on new levels of independence, focus, and collaboration.
In this rich, nurturing environment, students grow as thinkers, problem-solvers, and community members. Each day offers time for curiosity, creativity, and connection as children develop the habits of mind and heart that make learning meaningful and lasting.
To join our Kindergarten program, children must be 5 years old by September 1 of the school year.
We offer flexible enrollment options to accommodate different family needs:
Full Day: 8:15 AM – 3:00 PM (includes lunch)
Half Day: 8:15 AM – 11:45 AM (does not include lunch)
In Kindergarten, learning remains active and experiential. Play is a tool for discovery, communication, and growth—children build with materials, invent stories, experiment with nature, and express themselves through art and movement. Teachers observe closely and guide these experiences toward deeper inquiry, connecting children’s interests to emerging skills in literacy, numeracy, and social understanding.
Each child’s curiosity leads the way, supported by intentional teaching that helps them make sense of their world while building confidence, independence, and joy in learning.
Emergent Literacy
Kindergarteners explore the building blocks of reading and writing through playful, intentional experiences with language. They engage in storytelling, journal writing, phonemic awareness games, and shared reading that strengthen early decoding and comprehension skills. Teachers use research-based methods that blend explicit phonics instruction with authentic literacy experiences, helping children connect sounds to meaning and stories to self.

Mathematical Thinking
Mathematics is explored through hands-on problem-solving, games, and real-world contexts. Children work with manipulatives to understand number, pattern, shape, and measurement. They build reasoning and persistence by noticing relationships, explaining their thinking, and applying math to everyday situations—counting, comparing, building, and estimating.
Social Studies
Social studies helps children begin to understand their place in the world. Kindergarteners explore themes of family, community, and care for the environment through stories, projects, and shared experiences. They learn about cooperation, fairness, and responsibility, laying the foundation for civic understanding and global awareness.
Social and Emotional Growth
Social learning is at the heart of Kindergarten at SRV. Children practice collaboration, empathy, and conflict resolution as they learn to navigate friendships and group dynamics. Through class meetings, cooperative play, and reflection, they develop self-awareness and a sense of belonging within their classroom community.
