Music Curriculum Overview:

• Preschool: Through singing games, movement, and exploration of instruments, young learners are introduced to the basics of steady beat and pitch, establishing a foundation for musical development.
• Kindergarten: The focus is on steady beat, both in the body and on instruments. Pitch matching and unison singing are introduced, with an emphasis on cultivating a quality “head voice.”
• First Grade: Students continue practicing pitch matching and expand their experience with barred instruments, exploring simple improvisations and creating unique sounds.
• Second Grade: Beginning part-singing is introduced through rounds and partner songs, allowing students to accompany their singing with barred instruments. They start to develop more complex skills like playing simple ostinatos.
• Third & Fourth Grades: Part-singing evolves as students learn simple harmonies and delve into more complex barred instrument accompaniments, solidifying their ensemble skills.
• Fifth & Sixth Grades: As students progress, they tackle complex ensemble pieces with a variety of instruments, moving toward improvising and composing music with chords and functional harmony.
