At The School in Rose Valley, diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice are essential to how we build community, design learning, and support children’s growth. These values are not separate from our educational philosophy; they are rooted in the very foundation of progressive education, which views schools as democratic communities where children learn through experience, collaboration, and meaningful engagement with others.
SRV embraces diversity in all its forms, including race, ethnicity, culture, gender identity, gender expression, family structure, socioeconomic background, religion, and lived experience. Progressive education has long emphasized the importance of honoring each child’s individuality and the richness that comes from learning with and from others. We believe that children thrive when their identities are affirmed, their voices are heard, and their experiences are respected.
Equity at SRV means helping every child access meaningful learning opportunities and feel a strong sense of belonging. Our progressive roots guide us to design developmentally appropriate, inquiry-based learning that centers student voice and encourages collaboration, reflection, and curiosity. We support students within the framework of a typical classroom setting, fostering independence, responsibility, and shared problem-solving. Through reflective practice, professional development, and partnerships, we work to create environments where each child can participate fully and flourish.
Belonging is central to our mission and to the progressive belief that community is a vital context for learning. We intentionally cultivate spaces where every member of the community feels welcomed, connected, and valued. Inclusion at SRV means ensuring that children are not only invited into community life but also empowered to contribute their perspectives and ideas.
Progressive education has long linked learning with civic engagement, fairness, and active participation in a democratic society. Justice remains a guiding principle in our work with children. We encourage students to ask questions, consider multiple viewpoints, and recognize the impact of their actions on others.
Through age-appropriate explorations of identity, community, and ethical responsibility, children learn what it means to stand up for themselves and others and to contribute to a more just and compassionate world. Our curriculum includes stories, discussions, and shared experiences that help students make sense of complex ideas in developmentally appropriate ways.
Our commitment to DEIJB is strengthened by our connections beyond campus. SRV is an active member of the Greater Philadelphia Diversity Collaborative (GPDC), which brings together peer schools for shared learning, professional development, and thoughtful dialogue. We also host the Preschool-to Second-Grade Educator’s Diversity Summit (P2EDS), a biennial gathering of early childhood and primary educators focused on identity development, inclusive teaching, and community building.
We partner with and support organizations that share our values and expand the ways our community engages with equity and justice. This includes U.D.T.J., a local initiative that advances equity through community engagement and advocacy; Making A Change Group, which empowers youth and families in Chester and Delaware County through prevention, mentoring, and community-building programs; and the NAACP Media Branch, which works to promote civil rights, challenge racial injustice, and strengthen community engagement through education and advocacy.
We also collaborate with Philadelphia Family Pride, a nonprofit that supports LGBTQ+ families in the greater Philadelphia region through advocacy, education, and inclusive family events, helping us affirm and celebrate a wide range of family identities.
We continue to build partnerships with local organizations that share our values, creating authentic opportunities for students to understand community engagement, cooperation, and social responsibility.
DEIJB at SRV is a living and evolving commitment. We reflect on our practices, listen to our community, and embrace ongoing learning. This growth mindset is a hallmark of progressive education, which asks schools to respond thoughtfully to the needs of their time while staying true to foundational values.
