Primary Circle is where children at The School in Rose Valley step confidently into the elementary years. These are the seasons of discovery—when emerging readers become fluent, young writers find their voices, and curiosity blossoms into deeper understanding.
In a classroom community built on trust, collaboration, and curiosity, children strengthen their foundational academic skills and develop the confidence to take on new challenges with joy and purpose.
At SRV, joy and rigor are not opposites but partners. In Primary Circle, children learn through experiences that are both structured and inspired—balancing explicit instruction with time to explore, question, and create.
Teachers design learning that is developmentally appropriate, research-informed, and grounded in SRV’s progressive philosophy. Lessons are responsive to children’s interests and curiosities, blending guidance with independence. The result is a classroom alive with purposeful conversation, meaningful challenge, and genuine delight in learning.
Literacy and Language Arts
SRV’s literacy program blends the best of current research with our whole-child philosophy. Students receive systematic instruction in phonics, spelling, and vocabulary, while engaging in authentic reading and writing experiences that bring language to life. They read widely across genres, write daily, and participate in lively discussions that build comprehension and confidence. Our approach emphasizes both skill and meaning: children learn how to read and why reading matters, cultivating not only fluency but also a genuine love of words, stories, and ideas.

Mathematics
Through games, manipulatives, and real-world problem-solving, students develop a strong sense of number, operations, and pattern. They learn to reason mathematically, explain their thinking, and see math as a creative tool for making sense of the world. Lessons are hands-on and responsive, building confidence and curiosity alongside foundational fluency.
Social Studies
Social studies helps students understand themselves as part of a wider community. Topics such as family, neighborhoods, and global cultures help them explore identity, cooperation, and fairness. Stories, maps, and group projects connect the study of people and places to empathy, citizenship, and social responsibility.
Specials
Our Specials programs in Wellness, Woodshop, Music, Art, Science, French, and Theater embodies SRV’s belief that learning happens through doing. These classes give children new ways to observe, express, and collaborate—strengthening fine motor skills, creativity, and self-awareness. In every space, from the art studio to the woodshop, students learn that imagination, persistence, and teamwork are as essential to growth as reading and math.
By the end of the Primary Circle, SRV students are confident readers, writers, and problem-solvers who approach learning with curiosity and care. They have built a strong academic foundation and developed the habits of mind—questioning, collaboration, and reflection—that prepare them for the deeper inquiry of the Middle Circle years.
They move forward as thoughtful, capable learners who take joy in discovery and pride in their growing independence.
