At The School in Rose Valley, Wellness is a core component of our curriculum, encompassing physical development, health, and the sheer enjoyment of play. We believe that nurturing children’s well-being is essential, and physical activity is woven into daily life at SRV.
Every teacher at SRV contributes to students’ physical development. From fine motor skills honed in art and math to attentive listening skills practiced in music and reading, every subject includes elements of physical and mental well-being. Our faculty also integrates health topics like nutrition and the importance of rest, underscoring the holistic nature of our approach to physical education.
SRV’s campus is a wonderland for active play and exploration. Young children enjoy age-appropriate playgrounds equipped with climbing structures, swings, and slides that promote muscle strength and coordination. Preschoolers have access to a paved path perfect for tricycles, scooters, and wagons, encouraging invigorating outdoor play and exercise.
Older students have the freedom to explore larger playgrounds that offer a variety of play structures, sandboxes, and even student-built features like the “Apple Core” ship. The campus also fosters imaginative play with whimsical additions like fairy houses that appear around gardens and tree bases.
The SRV woods are a cherished aspect of campus life, providing a space for running, fantasy play, and fort-building. Here, students form fluid social groups, sharing resources, negotiating roles, and navigating conflicts. Although play in the woods is always supervised, children are afforded a measure of freedom, gaining independence and practicing social skills as they solve problems and learn through trial and error.
Our approach to Wellness prioritizes ample time and space for play. SRV students engage in unstructured indoor activities during choice times and enjoy outdoor recess twice a day, rain or shine. Whether splashing in puddles, building mud pies, or sledding in winter, students at SRV embrace the elements as part of their play.
The preschool playground, just outside the classroom doors, invites young children to dig and build in the large sandbox, or imagine in the playhouse. Free play and organized games take place on the school blacktop, where children shoot hoops, play four-square, jump rope, and swirl hula hoops.
SRV’s spacious field hosts large group games like capture the flag, “touchball” (a variation of team handball), and soccer. With a small baseball diamond and backstop, students can play baseball, wiffle ball, and a favorite game, “run the bases,” year-round. These activities build teamwork, resilience, and joy in physical pursuits.
Wellness classes occasionally take place indoors in our gym, a versatile space for basketball, volleyball, and tumbling. The gym is also home to a climbing wall where students of all ages can practice traversing various hand and footholds. This setting allows for free play and energetic games, making it a beloved space for students to develop skills and enjoy physical activity in all seasons.
At SRV, Wellness is more than physical education; it’s about providing children with the freedom, time, and space to explore, move, and grow—laying the foundation for a healthy, active lifestyle that they carry with them beyond our school walls.
