At The School in Rose Valley, science is a cornerstone of our curriculum, engaging students from Preschool through Sixth Grade. Science isn’t just a standalone subject; it’s woven into daily classroom activities and integrated across other areas of study, sparking curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.
Our Science Room is a vibrant hub, brimming with the tools and artifacts of exploration. It’s a child-centered space that invites hands-on discovery and active learning. A special “please touch and explore” table offers an ever-changing array of objects for students to investigate. With tools like magnifying glasses, microscopes, and a growing collection of student-contributed treasures—such as birds’ nests, unique rocks, and snake skins—the Science Room is designed to encourage wonder and inquiry.
A Living Classroom:
Live animals are a vital part of the SRV science experience. Since 1929, we’ve recognized the importance of allowing children to observe, care for, and learn from living creatures. These animals help foster empathy and responsibility while providing rich opportunities for learning about biology and ecosystems.
Hands-On Science Education:
Our approach to science emphasizes doing. Students are immersed in age-appropriate scientific methodology, pursuing their own questions and tackling real-world challenges. Through hands-on experimentation, they learn to formulate hypotheses, conduct experiments, and draw conclusions. Each student keeps a science notebook to record their observations, data, and insights—encouraging critical thinking and scientific literacy.
To support these investigations, the Science Room is well-equipped with a variety of tools, including binoculars, microscopes, and measuring devices. Our extensive science library features books on plants, animals, minerals, and more, while our computers offer resources for research and report creation. With project and experiment books on hand, students can find inspiration and guidance for their next scientific inquiry.
Exploring the Outdoors:
Beyond the walls of the Science Room, our expansive campus serves as an outdoor laboratory. The nearby Rose Valley woods and creek are integral to our science program, offering countless opportunities for experiential learning. Students track animals in the snow, observe the changes of the seasons, and study local wildlife habitats.
Our oldest students, in grades 5 and 6, delve into environmental science, investigating the health of our watershed and creek. They analyze biodiversity, monitor for signs of erosion, and explore pollution’s impact, building a deep connection to the natural world and an understanding of their role in preserving it.
