Join us for an evening with Angus Fletcher, professor of story science at Ohio State University, as he shares his research on a uniquely human form of intelligence: the ability to imagine, intuit, adapt, and think beyond what we already know.

Angus Fletcher holds a PhD from Yale and dual degrees in neuroscience and Shakespeare. He is a professor of story science at Ohio State University’s Project Narrative, a research institute dedicated to the study of storytelling.
For more than a decade, Fletcher and his colleagues have studied the mental capacities that allow people to navigate situations that cannot be solved through rules, data, or computation alone. Their research focuses on what Fletcher calls Primal Intelligence, including intuition, imagination, emotion, and common sense. The research has been applied in settings ranging from military training to medicine, business, coaching, and education. Fletcher received the U.S. Army’s Commendation Medal in 2023 for his work developing training based on this research.
His new book, Primal Intelligence: You Are Smarter Than You Know, brings this research to a general audience. Drawing on figures including Vincent van Gogh, Marie Curie, Abraham Lincoln, and Shakespeare, Fletcher explores how intuition and imagination work, why they can be strengthened, and why these capacities may become increasingly important as artificial intelligence changes what computers can do.
His work has received praise from writers and thinkers including Malcolm Gladwell, Daniel Pink, and Brené Brown.
