Across the country, educators are grappling with sobering data about reading achievement. National assessments show that fewer students are reading fluently and confidently than at any point in the past 25 years. National data tells one story, but at The School in Rose Valley, our classrooms tell another. Each day at SRV, children explore the richness of language as they write stories, puzzle out new words, and grow into confident, capable readers and writers. We believe that joy and rigor are not opposites but partners. Our literacy approach blends the best of current research with SRV’s long-standing whole-child philosophy, seeing each student as a thinker, creator, and learner.
The national conversation about literacy has shifted toward the “science of reading,” an evidence-based movement focused on clear, explicit teaching of phonics and foundational language skills. Research has shown that students make the greatest gains when foundational skills such as decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension develop together.
At SRV, we ground our work in this research while also honoring what decades of progressive education have shown us about how children learn best: through play, discovery, and purposeful connection. Our literacy instruction is systematic and structured, but always rooted in curiosity, play, and discovery. We want children to learn how to read and also why reading matters.
From Preschool through Oldest Group, literacy instruction at SRV follows a carefully sequenced progression:
Each stage intentionally builds on the one before it. Families often ask why our youngest learners are not spending time on worksheets or drills, and that is by design. In these early years, children are developing the oral language, curiosity, and confidence that form the foundation for lifelong literacy. Through authentic conversation, storytelling, and play, they build the skills that make formal reading and writing both natural and meaningful. The full strength of our program comes into view when children experience the complete arc, from playful exploration to sophisticated comprehension and expressive writing. As they move through each stage, the layers of learning deepen and connect. By the time students reach the Oldest Group, they are not only reading independently, but also thinking critically about what they read, making connections, and expressing their ideas with clarity and insight.
The national story about declining literacy often focuses on what has been lost. At SRV, we focus on what can be built: curiosity, confidence, and a lasting relationship with language. When children are given the time, guidance, and inspiration to grow as readers and writers, they learn far more than how to decode words on a page. They learn how to listen closely, think deeply, and express themselves with clarity and heart. True literacy development is gradual and deeply human. It unfolds through daily moments of discovery and connection, not through shortcuts or hurried instruction. When children experience reading as both skill and delight, they become not just capable readers but confident learners with the imagination and empathy to shape their communities and the lives around them.
The world our students are entering needs people who can read with discernment, think critically, and communicate with purpose. It needs individuals who can find meaning, make sense of complexity, and care deeply about others. At The School in Rose Valley, we are proud to nurture these capacities every day, guiding children to become both readers and leaders.
