The Head of School
If you’ve strolled around campus recently, you might have noticed several small, wooden structures known as pretzel houses. The original pretzel house is tucked away at the head of the trail to Bamboo Island, and these simple, utilitarian structures have become a cherished part of SRV’s landscape.
Pretzel houses are as versatile as the imaginations of the children who play in them. On any given day, these little houses transform into ice cream stands, cafes, or even castles. Recently, I noticed chalk scrawled across the roof of one of our pretzel houses, advertising “assum” ice cream alongside a list of “speshel” flavors. I must say, I frequent these imaginative businesses often, and I’ve yet to be disappointed.
The original pretzel house has an equally delightful origin story. Years ago, it came about through a student-led fundraising effort. The kids sold pretzels, raising enough money to buy materials and construct the house themselves. From then on, it was affectionately known as the “pretzel house.”
Over the years, we’ve added more pretzel houses around campus, each one a reminder of the creativity and community spirit that define SRV. Historically, a replica pretzel house would even be auctioned off at our Annual Auction. The winning family would have a pretzel house delivered to their home, but what’s interesting is that as children grow older, they often choose to gift the house back to SRV. Our Facilities Manager, Dan Tracy, brings these well-loved houses back to campus, and it feels a bit like they’re coming home.
The pretzel houses remind me of our amazing alumni. Like the little structures that hold so many memories, our alumni return to SRV, too. It was heartwarming to see so many familiar faces at May Fair this past Sunday. SRV is unique in that we welcome alumni from every era back to campus regularly. High schools often have strong alumni networks, but it’s rare for schools serving young children to have this lasting connection.
Being a part of SRV stays with you. I think it’s comforting to know that you can always come back, whether you’re a child or an adult. Just like the pretzel houses they played in, our students carry SRV in their hearts, long after they’ve outgrown the structures themselves.
Pretzel houses have become a symbol of something much deeper than play. They represent the solid foundation our students build here—a foundation of strong character, a love for learning, and the ability to weather any storm. These little houses have sheltered many imaginations over the years, offering comfort, joy, and, of course, the best invisible ice cream you’ll ever taste.
As I watch our alumni reconnect with SRV, I see that their time here continues to be a source of strength and inspiration. Just like the pretzel houses, the values they’ve developed here—kindness, creativity, and resilience—stand as firmly as ever. It’s a pleasure to see that these foundations, built in childhood, remain solid throughout their lives.
So the next time you see one of our pretzel houses, know that they are more than just play structures. They’re a testament to the enduring connections our students form with SRV, the friends they make here, and the lessons they carry with them. And like any good pretzel house, they always have a way of coming back home.
